Paints and Stains
CAUTION: Oil-based paints and stains are considered hazardous because they can be flammable and contain toxic chemicals. Click here for options to manage household hazardous waste in York County.
REUSE: Paints and stains in good usable condition can be donated or resold. An internet search such as “donate paint York PA” will show organizations that accept these materials for donation, or click here to view a list of York County donation/reuse outlets. Reusable items can also be resold at garage sales, consignment stores, and on internet sale platforms.
TRASH: Latex paints and stains can be disposed in the regular trash. To prevent spillage, dry them using paint hardeners purchased at home improvement stores or mix them with an absorbent material such as shredded paper or kitty litter, and secure lids firmly. When disposing of aerosol paint cans, secure can caps firmly. Tightly bag all paint and stain containers before disposing in the regular trash. Your waste hauler may have additional instructions regarding this material. For more information, contact them directly. Paints and stains can also be disposed at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC) in the Small Load Drop-off Area liquids hopper. Ask the facility attendant for directions to the hopper upon arrival. For more information on YCRRC fees and hours click here.
