York County Envirothon

The York County Solid Waste Authority is a sponsor of the York County Envirothon.  The York County Envirothon, organized by the York County Conservation District, is a comprehensive, multi-media, interdisciplinary environmental education experience.  Through study materials provided, students gain knowledge of the earth’s ecological systems and environmental concepts and develop skills to recognize and resolve human impacts on the environment.  Every year, hundreds of York County students in grades 3-12 attend the competitions held at Rudy County Park.  Students compete in a team format within their own grade levels and are tested on their knowledge of aquatics, forestry, soils and wildlife.   At the senior high level, the winning team goes on to compete at the state level for the chance to represent Pennsylvania at the North American Envirothon national competition.

The North American Envirothon is the largest environmental education competition in the nation, originally created by Pennsylvania’s Conservation Districts for Senior High students.  Now, over 28 years later, Envirothon events are held throughout the United States and Canada.  The mission of the North American Envirothon is to develop knowledgeable skilled and dedicated citizens who have an understanding of natural resources and are willing and prepared to work towards achieving and maintaining a balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment.

The York County Envirothon events for 2017 are as follows:

  • Senior High: April 25
  • Middle School: May 2
  • 5th & 6th Grade: May 3
  • 3rd & 4th Grade: May 9
